Many years ago, when I was a senior at Dobie High School in Houston, Texas, I didn't know what I wanted to do in life. I can't remember who suggested the military back then, but I decided that it would be pretty cool to be a pilot in the Air Force. So, I took time after school one day and drove to the Air Force recruiting office. It was down by Baybrook Mall south of Houston. I walked in and was put in this room to watch a video about the Air Force and the process of getting enlisted etc. It was not long at all into the video, that they showed these guys lined up in chairs getting their hair shaved off. I was like " What the heck??? They are going to shave my hair off????". At that moment, I got up, told the guy this was not for me, and walked out! I could not understand how shaving my hair off would make me a better person. I knew that me having my head shaved would not change the way I would act in the military, or make me a better soldier or whatever. I just thought it was nuts and didn't want anything to do with such a ridiculous tactic.
Thinking back on that now I realize I didn't know all of the reasons why they shave the head, and those reasons make sense. I have a feeling that if I were to have enlisted, and they let me keep my long hair, I would shaved it off myself when I realized it was just too dang nasty to try and mange hair when in boot camp! ha!
My reason not to enlist and serve my county was ignorant, but it is what it is. Each time this day comes around, I think back on this event in my life, and am just thankful for all of the men and women who DID enlist, and who ARE serving this country. They are fighting to protect my freedom and my family's freedom and for that I say THANK YOU!!
